Texas Library Association Conference 2024

I’m heading to Texas wearing a couple of hats:  psychologist and author of books that address aspects of mental illness. Next week hundreds of librarians, educators, editors and authors plus students of all grades will meet at the annual Texas Library Association Conference to share information and talk about “what’s important today about books, banning, and libraries – and the important role of books.”

I share a panel with Ann Jacobus, Nikki Grimes, Mark Oshiro, Melissa Buron, and Stephanie Ledyard to discuss a life and death topic: “Grief, Loneliness, and Mental Health in Children’s Literature: How Stories Heal.” Find us from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Meeting Room 212 on Thursday, April 18th.

Mental illness touches all families.  Suicide is the second leading cause of death of our teens.  The right book at the right time in a child’s life can break the silence and isolation the still shrouds mental illness. When silence is broken, healing can begin.

During the week, I will share what I learn from the many librarians and educators who will be speaking about the importance of having good books for all kids.

The freedom to read whatever we choose to read … need to read … want to read … is one important topic.  What are your thoughts about freedom to read and the importance of books to help break the silence of shame that too often keeps a person from seeking help?

I was first a research psychologist studying brain development at the University of Minnesota and London University before following my passion – writing for children. Learn more…
